4 Signs You Need New Tires

Performing routine maintenance on your car is an important way that you can keep your vehicle in good working order. However, when you're servicing your engine and changing your oil, don't forget about your car's tires. Like other parts on your car, your tires have a shelf life, and eventually they will wear out. Here are four ways you can tell that you need new tires:

1. Your tire treads are worn out.

According to How Stuff Works, your tire treads need to be at least 1/16 inch deep for optimal safety. If your tire treads are more shallow than this, your tires won't be able to grip the road as effectively. This is especially dangerous in rainy or snowy conditions, since your car might skid. You can check to see if your tire treads are deep enough by placing a penny in the tracks. If Abraham Lincoln's head is totally visible when you put it upside down into your tire tread, you need to replace your tires.

2. You've had your tires for years.

Even if your tires don't show other signs of wear, tires that are too old can be dangerous, because they're more prone to puncture or tear at any time. Experts recommend replacing your tires every 6 to 10 years.

3. You park your car outdoors.

Parking your car outdoors doesn't automatically mean you need new tires right now, but you should know that it can wear your tires out sooner. Tires that are exposed to a lot of direct sunlight, rain, and snow tend to degrade faster. If you don't store your car in a garage, you will have to replace your tires much more quickly.

4. You notice damage on the side of your tires.

Although the sides of your tires don't come into contact with the road, they can be a good indicator of the overall health of your tires. Tires that seem to be cracking can be a sign that the whole tire is getting brittle, possibly from ultraviolet exposure. If you notice any cracks, punctures, or deep scratches, your tire may be compromised. Never drive with damaged tires; instead, have your tires replaced as soon as possible.

These are just a few signs that you should replace your tires. When shopping for new tires, make sure to always purchase from a reputable tire shop. High quality tires will last longer, saving you money in the long run.
