When your truck suffers a transmission failure, there are a number of options. You can have the transmission repaired, replaced, or rebuilt. Any of these options is viable under certain conditions. In case your transmission already has a lot of miles on it, however, rebuilding or replacing it are usually the most viable options.

Replacing a transmission is quite straightforward: you get the best possible results but at a very high cost. On the other hand, rebuilding a transmission is cheaper, but many people are concerned with how reliable a rebuilt transmission actually is.

What Is a Transmission Rebuild?

A transmission rebuild is like an overhaul of your transmission system. The transmission is completely taken apart and each part is inspected. The emphasis is on the "hard parts" of the transmission. If any of these parts is damaged or worn, it is replaced. After the worn or broken parts are replaced, the transmission is reassembled according to the manufacturer specifications.

"Soft parts," such as seals, bands, gaskets, and clutches, are also replaced. Once the work is done, the customer will end up with a truck transmission repair that performs as well as a new one.

What Is the Appeal of Transmissions That Have Been Rebuilt?

Rebuilding a transmission doesn't give you a transmission that's brand new. As soon as you start using it again, the wear and tear continues from where it left off. However, when the alternative is getting a brand new transmission system, there are several advantages to rebuilding:

  • It's a lot cheaper – it can cost almost half as much compared to buying a new transmission.

  • It's faster – the entire process can be completed in a few days since you don't have to put in an order for an entire transmission and wait until the manufacturer sends one.

What About Reliability?

Reliability is one of the major issues that vehicle owners have to deal with when they get any repairs. It's only natural that they'd have similar concerns about transmissions that have been rebuilt. The reality about these transmissions is that they are not new, therefore, they may not offer the same level of reliability.

However, statistics have shown that transmissions that have been rebuilt still offer a very high level of reliability. Because the worn parts are taken out and replaced, the overall wear and tear in the system is very low. This means that this transmission can serve you for a very long time, and some repair shops will even offer warranties for several years.
